Santigold makes surprise comeback with dancehall mixtape and lead single "Run the Road"
Off the back of giving birth to twins, Santigold drops a surprise dancehall mixtape, I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions, with lead single "Run the Road".
Santigold is back with a dancehall mixtape that's infectious, and full of knowledge as she delves into her passion for Afro-Caribbean music and topics of anti-materialism, empowerment, female strength and resilience.
The lead single "Run the Road" was premiered on 26 July by Zane Lowe on his Apple Music Beats 1 show as his World Record.
Santigold first arrived with her debut album a decade ago, and today she revealed a 10-track mixtape.
Produced by Mixpak Records Dre Skull, I Don't Want: The Gold Fire Sessions was put together while Santigold was pregnant. Speaking to Pitchfork, she explained, "A lot of songs on this record I wrote in the studio. I was thinking of it as a mixtape. The whole point was: These are the issues on my mind right now. Just throw it down. Don’t be too precious about the lyrics. That’s why I called it The Gold Fire Sessions, because it’s a collection of songs from the moment. “Gold Fire” is the name of one of those songs, and it’s about a burning fire inside that you can’t put out—a passion for fighting for what you believe in."
Her mixtape arrives at a perfect time as she joins Lauryn Hill on tour in the US across a few dates.
