Samaris share first ever English-language single "Wanted 2 Say" from new LP Black Lights
Icelandic three piece Samaris have unveiled their first ever English-language track "Wanted 2 Say", a striking new standalone single.
The song was teased last week, with the release date plonked at the end of a tantalising trailer.
A press release states that Samaris' new album Black Lights was written and recorded in Berlin, Ireland, and Icelandic capital Reykjavík over the course of a year. All three members - Þórður Kári Steinþórsson (aka Doddi - programming), Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir (clarinet), Jófríður Ákadóttir (vocals) - are now based in different countries and cultures, with the LP written "apart".
Speaking about this new track, Ákadóttir says:
“Doddi sent me the track, similar to the final, and I lay down the scratch vocals in my bedroom. We finished the track at Studio Hljóðriti, in Hafnarfjörður. They were so kind to us, they gave us spare keys and let us use the space in the evenings. We spent a lot of nights there, since it’s a bit out of town and we work well at night time (that was during summer so we were all high as the sky from 24-hour daylight!). Most of the tracks on the album were written there, on Kiddi’s beautiful synthesisers. We used the little room a lot, which belongs to Icelandic legend Bó Halldórsson. He has a giant photo of his cat hovering over which I think was a massive inspiration... ‘Wanted 2 Say’'s lyrics are kind of all over the place. My thoughts were about Iceland and the nature, how it’s our most precious thing - you know that cliché! But the theme of the song became more about us writing and expressing our thoughts in English.”
The full single is out 8 April via One Little Indian.
Third record Black Lights will follow the band's self-titled 2013 debut, their 2014 follow up Silkidrangar, and last year's live Silkidrangar reinterpretation LP. It's out 10 June on One Little Indian.
