Routine share new cut "Calm and Collected" as second preview of debut EP
Routine, the new duo made up of Jay Som's Melina Duterte and Chastity Belt's Annie Truscott, have shared new single "Calm and Collected" as a second preview of their debut EP And Other Things.
Last month Truscott and Duterte released their first Routine single "Cady Road", and today (17 November) the duo have returned with "Calm and Collected", which will feature on their And Other Things EP.
The new single arrives with a Eleanor Petry-directed video. As Paste Magazine reports, the duo said of the video, "We have both been wanting to collaborate with our good friend Eleanor for a while and the timing just lined up perfectly. Eleanor makes the most beautiful videos and we wanted something kind of dreamy and organic. When we scheduled the shoot in Joshua Tree, we didn’t realise that there would be a full moon. That definitely added a magical element to a project that already felt so special."
And Other Things was written and recorded by the couple in Joshua Tree over a month during the coronavirus lockdown. Truscott, who usually plays bass in Chastity Belt, wrote a lot of the material and takes the lead with singing across the EP. Duterte, who fronts Jay Som, explains that she saw it as an opportunity to "take the backseat" as accompanist, producer, and engineer.
Duterte says, "In Annie’s songs I hear a yearning for something just out of reach, something unachievable. She’s such a great singer, so it felt good to just layer instruments to make her vision for it feel fully fleshed out."
Truscott adds of the EP, "I think of And Other Things as a series of vignettes. We aren’t telling one story here, we’re telling a series of short stories that people can hopefully relate to."
