Ross From Friends announces second album with lead single "The Daisy"
Ross From Friends has announced his second album Tread, and has released album opener "The Daisy" as the first taster.
British producer Ross From Friends, real name Felix Clary Weatherall, has returned with "The Daisy", which is accompanied by a Rudá Santos-directed video and is also the lead outing from his upcoming record Tread.
Weatherall's new album follows 2018's Family Portrait, and came together after he built his own plugin called Thresho. Thresho (available via Ableton's Max For Live platform) begins recording when the audio "hits a user-defined threshold", and automatically saves the clips with timestamps, meaning Weatherall was free to experiment without needing to replay or recapture any parts.
He spent the first six months just experimenting with his plugin, and when he started composing the album later, his Thresho software allowed him to revisit a vast library of sounds and select specific moments. He says, "Sometimes a whole tune could come from an idea within a recording or sometimes I’d just dump a random recording into an existing project and see what happens."
Tread is also a nostalgic album, as Weatherall discovered during lockdown that where he was living was the same neighbourhood that his nan used to work in, and a place where his dad used to attend parties. "In my mind it chronologically tied itself to the tunes I was listening to across that period too. How things have changed over the past 10 years in South London can be mapped with the type of music I was listening to throughout various stages of living here. I’ve basically honoured all of these musical touchstones across the album, thinking about how those memories and the tunes attached have been etched into a permanent chronology that’s completely personal to me."
He adds, "I’ve amassed all of these memories from a time spent just messing around in South London, as with Thresho, I’ve amassed all of these recordings from sitting around and experimenting musically. Tread refers to the marks that I’ve been permanently leaving, both in my memories and throughout the process using Thresho."
