Rising pop sensation Sabella tells us she's a "sucker for a good synth"
London-via-Somerset pop sculptor Sabella tells us all about her work so far and what comes next ahead of her show at our new music festival, The Five Day Forecast.
With a small-but-mighty arsenal of pristine, R&B-infused tunes Sabella has won hearts up and down the country - and a big 2018 beckons, with new releases and live dates on the horizon. Earlier numbers from Sabella such as "Loving Like This" remain firm faves with us, but newer gems in the vein of Everything But The Girl cover "Missing" also thrill.
Check out summer stunner "Fortress" below and get to know Sabella a bit better with our Q&A afterwards.
BESTFIT: Could you introduce yourselves for us please?
Sabella: "Course! I’m Sabella. I’m a 22-year-old singer songwriter living in South East London but originally from Somerset. Is that a boring introduction, haha?"
What do you try to do with your music and how do you achieve this?
Sabella: "I don’t think I have a sole intention when it comes to my music generally. Obviously, there are times that I do write with clear intent but that changes from song to song dependent on what I’m writing about or what body of work I'm looking to put together. To be honest, I'm just hoping that I can inspire something in someone somewhere by doing what I do in whatever way that manifests. Whether it's my music itself that inspires a feeling in someone, or takes them some place, or, like, a young girl being inspired to do what they love."
Can you tell us what musical and non-musical influences have shaped your sound?
Sabella: "Where do you start?" My music is shaped by so many things! Not that that is unique to me but it's hard to be inclusive of all the things that make it what it is. I mean - sonically - I listen to a lot of '80s music as a big source of inspiration. I'm a sucker for a good synth, always! But in equal measure, R&B and soul music. I listened to a lot of people like Sade and Joan Armatrading and D’Angelo growing up and in terms of the way write and sing, I think these types of artists are half responsible. Then non musical influences...? The life of mine. The life of yours!"
What should people expect from your Five Day Forecast show?
Sabella: "This show's gunna be a fun one for me. I’m going to be doing some of my older songs. Some new ones and then things I also haven't released yet. Everything is going in!"
What are you working on now/next?
Sabella: "At the minute, I’m rehearsing for live shows and in the studio! I'm not sure at this point what it is I will be releasing next or what form it will take. Whether it will be an album or another EP or what? But I'm trying not to think too much about what it will become and just getting my head fully in the process."
How is 2018 shaping up? What are you looking forward to next year?
Sabella: "I feel like I’m definitely starting 2018 right. My next single will be coming out at the beginning of next year and I'm basically kicking it off with this gig! Thinking and hoping that's kind of indicative of what's to come. More gigs/more studio/more songs."
