Rick Rubin didn't produce Jay-Z's new album, just appears in promo video for no apparent reason
-
Sure, Rick Rubin appears in the Samsung ad and promotional vid for Jay-Z’s new record, but he didn’t actually have any part in producing it, as previously thought.
It seems that the Def Jam founder and uber-producer was merely used as ‘meat in the room’ for the footage, as he is pictured relaxing on a couch, amongst other things, probably too tired after his heavily involvement with Kanye’s recent success of an album Yeezus.
Rubin explained to XXL: “The point of me being in the commercials was that he was filming a documentary and he asked me- I imagine he is comfortable talking to me- to come listen to the songs with him and just talk about the songs, just listen to it and talk about it, and that’s what we did. It was fun.”
“I liked what I heard, but it was a little difficult – after just coming from the Kanye sessions – to listen to Jay’s album, because they’re so different,” Rubin added. “I was in a very alternative and progressive headspace, and Jay’s record is a more traditional hip-hop record.”
Ouch! Nevertheless Jay-Z’s “traditional hip-hop” album, Magna Carta Holy Grail drops 4 July via Samsung smartphones. Check out the promo video below which sees Jay-Z discussing his song about Blue Ivy with the reclined Rick Rubin.
