Real Estate's Martin Courtney announces second solo album with lead cut "Corncob"
Martin Courtney of Real Estate has shared details of his second solo album Magic Sign, and has released "Corncob" as the first taster of the record.
"Corncob" is the first preview of Courtney's new solo album, and follows his appearance on Family Portrait's "YES!SSS" single last August.
The Real Estate lead vocalist said of the single, which is teamed with a video co-directed by Bráulio Amado and Antonio Vicentini, "The lyrics are about a specific time, the end of youth, pre-adulthood, scummy kid hanging around your hometown a little too long, smoking weed and driving around the surrounding area with your friends to get as completely lost as possible. Eventually getting home using these little green signs that are posted throughout the NJ suburbs telling you which way to go to reach different towns. We called them magic signs."
"You do this enough times and it eventually gets harder and harder to get lost," Courtney added. "A song about pushing the boundaries of where you grew up until you exhaust the mystery and hit a different kind of boundary. A song about aimless kids looking for direction."
Magic Sign will follow Courtney's 2015 debut solo album Many Moons, and was written across 2020 and 2021. Courtney performed and produced the album himself, which was recorded, mixed and co-produced by Rob Schnapf at Mant Sounds in LA.
Courtney's second solo album features contributions from Matt Barrick, Oliver Hill, Kacey Johansing and Tim Ramsey.
