Real Estate release mellow cover of Galaxie 500's "Plastic Bird"
Real Estate have shared their dreamy rendition of Galaxie 500's "Plastic Bird" ahead of the Record Store Day Copenhagen live album reissue.
Over the past few weeks, various musicians and Galaxie 500 admirers have been sharing their covers of Galaxie 500 songs, leading up to the release of the Record Store Day Copenhagen live album reissue.
The cover series was put together by Guided By Voices/Yoko Ono manager David Newgarden, and today (27 August), Real Estate have unveiled their take on "Plastic Bird".
As Stereogum reports, the band says of their cover, "In the early days of Real Estate, people often assumed that Galaxie 500 were a big influence on us. In hindsight, I can definitely hear it, but at the time, I for one had never listened to them. Anyway, I’m glad for the comparisons because it led me to actually check them out, and they became a favorite band of mine. So now I can say unequivocally that Galaxie 500 are indeed a big influence on us. Not that it matters! Wonderful band. Have a nice day."
Real Estate revealed on Twitter that the cover was a home recording, and that "each band member recorded their parts in their respective homes."
"Plastic Bird" originally featured on Galaxie 500's 1989 second album On Fire.
The cover is Real Estate's first release since their March album The MainThing.
Over the past month the likes of Thurston Moore, Kiwi Jr., Stephin Merritt, Versus and more have also contributed their Galaxie 500 covers to the series.
