Radiohead, Let's Eat Grandma, Bonobo, and more unite to declare climate emergency
A mixture of music industry labels and professionals have launched Music Declares Emergency, which has already been backed by Radiohead, Let's Eat Grandma, Bonobo, and many more.
The description of Music Declares Emergency reads, "Music Declares Emergency is a group of artists, music industry professionals and organisations that stand together to declare a climate and ecological emergency and call for an immediate governmental response to protect all life on Earth."
In the declaration, it states they want the government to "tell the truth about the climate and ecological emergency", to "reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by no later than 2030", and have acknowledged the impact of the music industry on the environment.
Music Declares Emergency also share that they will "speak up about the climate and ecological emergency", and "work towards making our businesses ecologically sustainable and regenerative."
As well as Radiohead, Let's Eat Grandma, and Bonobo, musicians such as Caribou, Cosmo Sheldrake, Doomsquad, Ed Harcourt, Ezra Furman, FEMME, Fay Milton (Savages), Hot Chip, IDLES, Imogen Heap, Jordan Rakei, Maribou State, Midlake, Nadine Shah, Penelope Isles, The Cinematic Orchestra, The Haxan Cloak, Tom Odell, Tunng, Yannis Philippakis (Foals), and many others have already signed up to the cause.
Hot Chip said of the declaration, "I think it’s important to support this cause because I’m personally interested in survival and the survival of my children."
Fay Milton of Savages also added, "As I sat at a music festival in the desert, watching Extinction Rebellion’s action unfold so beautifully in London, I realised that something had to change. It seemed like the music world had lost touch with reality, partying like there’s no tomorrow, when ‘no tomorrow’ has become the forecast."
