Pussy Riot documentary set to premiere at Sundance 2013
A documentary film about jailed Russian punks Pussy Riot will premiere at next year’s Sundance Festival.
The movie is entitled Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer and follows the lives of the three political protesters following their inital arrest right through to their subsequent trial and eventual imprisonment.
The documentary, directed by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin, will air as part of Sundance’s ‘World Cinema Documentary Competition’ at the annual event in Utah from 17-27 January 2013.
The trio had been the subject of a lengthy trial following the performance of a “punk prayer” in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The song requested that the Virgin Mary drive Russian president Vladimir Putin from power.
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, have been named prisoners of conscience by Amnesty International. They have become a cause celebre since their incarceration, with musicians including Madonna and Paul McCartney voicing their support.
Pussy Riot were recently nominated for TIME Magazine‘s ‘Person of the Year’ Award.
