Priest defends Kanye West against 'I Am A God' blasphemy accusations
A man of the cloth has publicly come out in defence of Yeezus himself, Kanye West, after the countless accusations of blasphemy for his track, ‘I Am A God’.
Father Matthew Moretz, an associate rector of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Manhatta, is host of the ‘Father Matthew Presents’ web series, dedicating the latest edition to Kanye’s plight. In it, he argues that West hasn’t broken the laws of the bible in his song but enforced them, as Psalm 82 states: “You are gods/And all of you are children of the Most High.”
Moretz gives a brief analysis of the star, making suggestions that being worshipped by his fans could have possibly given West the messianic complex. ”He realises that in the cultural system he is an idol,” he says. “He is a celebrity. A divinity. Everybody loves him. They adore him. They give him all the awards, all the money he wants, all the women he wants… it’s unbelievable.”
Concluding on his thoughts on Yeezus, Moretz says: “Give Kanye a break. This is some heavy deep stuff. It is about prayer, value, idolatry, and he is wrestling with this. Wouldn’t you wrestle with this? Would you be able to resist it?”
