Premier: Trophy Wife debut 'Discovery' during Abbey Road session
Recorded as part of the new Channel 4 series Abbey Road Debuts, a new ‘sessions’ type show that plonks an up and coming act into the world famous studio for the very first time and films the results in front of a small studio audience. A bit like that Sky Arts ‘From The Basement’ show from a few years back then, but with added artist interviews courtesy of 6Music’s Tom Ravenscroft. Intrigued? You should be. Because the lineup is quite stellar. With performances lined up from Mount Kimbie, Crystal Fighters, James Blake, Lower Dens and Dark Dark Dark it’s certainly one to set your *VHS timers* for.
An act that we’ve talked quite a lot about over the past few months, Trophy Wife are the latest act to film at the studio. Recording three cuts from their as-yet untitled album, only two will be shown on the actual TV show. So what happens to the third song? Cast aside to the cutting room floor for ever and eternity? Hell no. It gets uploaded to Soundcloud for your listening pleasure, dear reader.
As previously mentioned, ‘Discovery’ will feature on the Oxfordian’s forthcoming debut album. Much has been muttered over the interweb about the trio who just so happen to be a part of the ‘Blessing Force’ movement that has sparked off careers for blog sensations Chad Valley and Pet Moon (amongst others). And, on the strength of ‘Discovery’, the hype is not in vain. A slow burning, quietly atmospheric number with a prog underbelly – perhaps slightly indebted to Pink Floyd. It takes a u-turn halfway through and mutates into a brooding powerhouse finale, somehow maintining restraint and grace. Impressive stuff.
