Poppy Ajudha can't wait for 2018, which she says will be a "beautiful year"
We speak with London's potent genre-blender Poppy Ajudha about inspirations and ambitions ahead of her show at our new music festival, the Five Day Forecast.
Ajudha's been toiling away on words and rhymes since her early teens, finding new sounds in her father's nightclub the Paradise Bar and toying with the boundaries of poetry and jazz to devilish results. Fast-forward a few years, and after a stint as a behind-the-scenes songwriter, the ultra-talented artist is becoming on of the UK capital's most talked about upstarts via collabs with fellow Londoner Kojey Radical and her own striking vision. Ajudha's world teeters between classic and contemporary tones, never committing to either and being all the stronger for it.
Check out Ajudha's mesmerising "Spilling Into You" below, and get to know her a bit better after with our Q&A.
BESTFIT: Could you introduce yourselves for us please?
Poppy Ajudha: "I'm Poppy Ajudha, a 22-years-young musician from South East London."
What do you try to do with your music and how do you achieve this?
Poppy: "I aim to produce political and social comment through my lyricism as well as portray my heritage and cultural influences through the music. I do this by always being honest and true to my intimate thoughts and feelings."
Can you tell us what musical and non-musical influences have shaped your sound?
Poppy: "Every experience I've ever had has shaped my music in some way or another so this is a difficult question. I'm constantly inspired by music around me and in this sense I could create any style I want, it is the non-musical life experiences have helped to direct my musical choices and find purpose in what I do. Travelling, learning, reading as much as I can are empowering processes which in turn empower my music."
What should people expect from your Five Day Forecast show?
Poppy: "Poppy Ajudha."
What are you working on now/next?
Poppy: "My first EP is soon to be released alongside a few special collabs in the new year. Keep your eyes peeled."
How is 2018 shaping up? What are you looking forward to next year?
Poppy: "There are so many exciting prospects for 2018, I can't wait for the holidays to be over so I can get back on it! It's going to be a beautiful year."
