POP Montreal Present POP Shots Episode 3: Socalled
For Episode Three of POP Montreal’s POP Shots series we turn to Mr. Josh Dolgin, AKA Socalled. A familiar face in the Montreal scene for over 10 years, Dolgin’s restless creativity has seen him work as a photographer, a magician, a puppet-maker and a cartoonist as well as a rapper and producer. His wide, wild and varied projects even led to him being the subject of 'The Socalled Movie', a feature length documentary produced in 2010 by the National Film Board of Canada.
This year Dolgin has already released Life of Slice, the second collection of his mother A.C. Dolgin’s recipes, to mark her 70th Birthday as well as Peoplewatching, his 5th studio album. The album is a melting pot of pop, jazz, reggae, klezmer and hip-hop beats full to the brim with guest performances including Dancehall legend Josey Wales, Fred Wesley (Parliament/Funkadelic), Quebec soul star Pierre Perpall and DJ Rob Swift. For his POP Shots performance Socalled was joined only by his canine companion Poopsie, who spent the duration of the shoot sitting on his feet. ‘Fire on Hutchinson St’ is the first time in his career that Dolin has gone solo, and this recording documents the first time he ever performed the song live.
On May 23rd Socalled will hit The Cavern Stage at Liverpool Sound City as POP Montreal showcase 3 of Quebec’s finest artists. Forest In His Heart (Ira Lee) kick things off at 6.05pm, Socalled takes the stage at 6.40pm and electronic duo Beat Market close things out at 7.10pm
