Philip Glass and Amon Tobin join celebrations for 40 years of the Kronos Quartet
U.S string ensemble, the Kronos Quartet, who are in the midst of commemorating their fortieth anniversary, are set to be honoured by previous collaborators Philip Glass and Amon Tobin, amongst others.
In addition to being the subject of a commemorative exhibition at the New York Library for the Performing Arts, the Grammy Award-winning Seattle string quartet will be performing new compositions by the iconic Glass- whose work they first performed on their eponymous 1986 album- and by minimalist luminary Terry Riley, who has also written for and performed with the quartet. Amon Tobin, the Brazilian electronic musician, will perform with the quartet at their 14 July show at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco.
They will also be premièring material from Sunny Yang, who last month replaced Jeffrey Zeigler to become the group’s fourth cellist in their forty-year career. Yang’s songs are to be included in a six-CD boxset from Nonesuch Records, one that will include world music albums like 1992′s Pieces of Africa, which upon its release reached #1 on the Billboard Top World Albums chart.
The Kronos Quartet will play London’s Barbican Centre on the 18 September, alongside renowned Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen.
