Petition to save The Buffalo Bar from closure started, The Horrors and more offer support
A petition has been started to save London venue The Buffalo Bar from "imminent" closure by its new landlords.
It was recently announced by management that the bar was to bow out after 14 years on New Years Eve.
The intimate venue has a loyal following, and one of its fans, Darryl Chamberlain, has started a petition on Change.org, stating:
"It's a venue its freeholder, County Estate Pubs, and its leaseholder, Stonegate Pub Company (which owns Slug & Lettuce, Yates's and Scream bars), should be proud of.
Instead, County Estate Pubs plans to evict the Buffalo Bar; leaving us without our favourite nights out and its staff without jobs. There are no plans for the basement - it's likely the venue will remain empty; a blow to the economy of this part of the capital."
The Horrors, The Subways and more have lent support to the cause. The former's Rhys Webb said to NME: "The Buffalo Bar was one of London's coolest venues... a basement club you could creep in to and party all night. A vital stage for new bands and the home of The Cave Club for the last seven years. I don't think there's anywhere quite like it left and it will be sorely missed. Toy, Telegram, The Voyeurs, Connan Mockasin, Moon Duo, Temples and Factory Floor all played amazing early shows for my Cave Club night. The amazing staff let us get away with murder too."
The Subways - who play a farewell show 3 December - added: "It's genuinely heartbreaking. We played our first London show there (all underage, I might add!), met our manager there, met some great friends, saw and took part in some awesome gigs, and we are left with some incredible memories. We learnt so much in that dark, welcoming, cool little basement, and it's weird knowing that soon it'll no longer be there. The Subways without the Buffalo Bar doesn’t feel right."
The petition can be signed here. At the time of writing, it has nearly 4000 signatures.
