An online petition is calling for famous London venue Earls Court, former host to the BRIT Awards among other high-profile live concerts, to be saved from demolition.
The current owners of the venue are in talks with local counsellors over a redevelopment deal to convert the building into 8000 new flats. This, however, has been met by much uproar by music fans in the capital.
The petition, which can be found here, argues that:
“London is short of event space, when the UK aims to promote itself as a global business centre but is losing revenue / trade to other countries.
The plan will substantially contract the event industry; reduce the number of visitors, all after the Olympics elevated the city’s status to a global audience.”
Earls Court currently attracts over 2.5m visitors, employs thousands of people, and provides over £1bn/year in revenue. The petition has been signed by 1,001 people at the time of publishing.
