Paul Thomas Saunders shares his theme tune for an imaginary Christmas apocalypse movie
Atmospheric singer/songwriter Paul Thomas Saunders today unveils bittersweet festive single "Christmas, The Sequel".
The track follows up recent offerings "Holding On For Love" and "I'll Come Running", and nods to a few familiar faces - Oliver Wilde's warped lo-fi pop fuzz can be heard in the guitars, the chords are a wink to John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" - but Saunders' ability to make a song sound truly big is this tinsel-strewn tune's brightest facet. With snare rolls, fizzing electronics, and lush layers of warmth gradually worming into the mix, what began life fragile and desolate ends full of heart.
"I'm a big Christmas movie fan, but every time the festive season comes around I feel that there's a giant black hole of a gap in the market," says Saunders. "The Christmas apocalypse movie. No-one would give me the desired budget to make said Christmas apocalypse movie, so this year, the world will have to make do with just the theme tune. I was going for one part It's A Wonderful Life, one part The Road - however, it may just be somewhere in the middle of The Muppet Christmas Carol and Armageddon. Oh Well."
The Brighton-based musician will play Sage Gateshead on 26 January 2018 with Brooke Bentham and Harri Endersby.
