Outlaw cover versions, says Prince

Prince has suggested the law be changed to ensure his songs are un-coverable.

During an interview on US late night talk show George Lopez Tonight, the purple one attacked the compulsory licensing law that allows cover versions to be produced without permission, citing the fact that the law “doesn’t exist in any other form, be it books or movies.”

“There’s only one version of Law and Order,” Prince explained, “there’s several versions of ‘Kiss’ and ‘Purple Rain’.”

Prince has a history of conflict with those seeking to use his songs and likeness – he even took to suing his fans for using photos on websites. Last year, he took a stance firmly against the web, stating, “The Internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.”

While some of us would gladly welcome a law that prohibits the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow from ruining one of the greatest songs of the 80s, it would be a sad day if we didn’t get to see Prince contribute such incredible musicianship to things like this*:
