Original Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe art exhibition to launch
The late Stuart Sutcliffe, best known for his stint as bassist for The Beatles between 1957-1960, will receive an art showcase from Harper’s Books in East Hampton, New York.
The exhibition, entitled Stuart Sutcliffe: Yea Yea Yea, has been curated by Richard Prince and features 21 of Sutcliffe’s paintings and paper-based works. It will run from 10 August - 14 October.
According to Harper Books website, the exhibition “seeks to recontextualize (Sutcliffe’s) oeuvre within the paradigm of the contemporary art world, highlighting the enduring significance of his work for both late Modernist art history and present-day artistic practices.” The selected art will emphasize “the collaged geometricism of his works on paper and the dense gestural abstraction of his paintings.”
An essay that Prince authored about Sutcliffe will feature in a limited edition booklet published by Harper. Of the 500 copies available, Prince and Sutcliffe’s sister Pauline will sign the first 50.
Sutcliffe quit The Beatles in 1960 and dedicated the rest of his life to his art before he died unexpectedly from a brain hemorrhage in 1962.
