ODESZA share new track "Loyal", explaining it "took on a life of its own over the years"
Immersive electronica duo ODESZA mean war with their blistering new cut "Loyal".
ODESZA have practically been touring the world since March this year, and have today unveiled new track "Loyal".
Scenic and thumping like a war chant, "Loyal" is ODESZA's first offering since 2017's A Moment Apart record.
We had a chance to catch up with Clayton Knight, one half of the cinematic duo, since last year's conversation on their last album. Check it out below "Loyal".
BEST FIT: "Loyal" is quite a fast-paced track, can you tell us what feelings and ideas led to the track?
Clayton Knight: "This song had a very unique development compared to every other song we’ve made. It’s something we first worked into our live set in 2015. Since then, it’s taken on a few different iterations. It was a little bit of an experiment when we first played it, but it worked well as a heavier high energy track. We kept working on it, and after a couple of shows it took on a life of its own over the years. Now it feels like the time is right to give it a proper release."
BEST FIT: Do you have a go-to routine when looking for inspiration on writing new material?
Knight: "Inspiration comes in a lot of forms, and there’s no one go-to method for writing something new. As you create more new material, you’re always looking for ways to be excited about music. A common starting point for us is revisiting the music that we fell in love with in the first place. For this particular track, the inspiration and development took place over a couple years on the road playing for festival crowds and our own."
BEST FIT: You've had a whirlwind year of touring and festivals - have you got any highlights from the year and any artists to be keeping tabs on?
Knight: Playing Fuji Rock in Japan, and getting over to Asia for the first time was a career highlight for us. The food, culture, and fans were really memorable. Going back to Europe and headlining Lollapalooza are also standouts. Speaking of “Loyal”, we debuted the song at Coachella in 2015, so being able to come back for the first time since then and play the main stage felt like a good way to celebrate three years of non-stop work.
As for who to watch out for, our label Foreign Family Collective has some new signees that we’re really proud of. One of the latest is EVAN GIIA, who has some amazing music in the works and is joining us on our fall tour. pluko just released an incredibly cohesive and thoughtful album called sixteen, and our latest signee, ford., is someone who will be getting noticed a lot before the year is over."
