Norwegian newcomer Fanny Andersen reveals her love of Frank Ocean and Tove Lo
As she gears up to headline the first night of our new music festival, Norwegian synthpop firecracker Fanny Andersen opens up about her love of Frank Ocean and Tove Lo.
Andersen is the latest in a heady, steady stream of electrifying artists from the Nordic region. Like the rest of the names to reach our ears and shores, Andersen is a distinct talent - basically the only thing that links them all is their sheer brilliance. With a string of razor-sharp james, including "Kids" and "Not A Toy", Andersen has crafted a reputation for incisive lyrics backed by infectious electro hooks. It's still early days, but more (much more) is coming in the 12 months ahead... and she kicks it all off with us next month.
Watch the video for latest single "Not A Toy" below, and get to know Andersen a bit better via our Q&A afterwards.
BESTFIT: Could you introduce yourself for us please?
Fanny Andersen: "I’m a 22-year-old girl living in Oslo, Norway. I make music, drink way too much red wine, and right now trying to survive the freezing cold weather."
What do you try to do with your music and how do you achieve this?
Fanny: "I always try to write as honest and personal as possible. I do the thing I love the most, and hope that people maybe will like it. There is nothing more to it, really. I just want to write songs that I can be proud of! Just to be able to create music is the most magical thing in the whole entire world."
Can you tell us what musical and non-musical influences have shaped your sound?
Fanny: "Frank Ocean for sure. His Channel Orange album is one of my favorite albums ever. I think I like how he has no boundaries when it comes to how he writes. He doesn’t stick to the 'standard' way of writing, and it's so refreshing. Music that doesn’t have any rules. Tove Lo’s Queen Of The Clouds has also inspired me so much, the way she writes just amazes me. She’s so honest and raw, and doesn’t give a fuck if people don’t like it. I think that album has shaped how I write music today. All the hooks on that album are just insanely cool, like you can feel every word she’s saying. How much she means it. I think those two are my main inspiration when it comes the way I write.
"When it comes to sound I really think it depends on the mood you’re in in that day, not anything specific. One day I can make a super sad piano ballad and the next I want to make an electric/synth based song with a super catchy hook. Like it’s the same way you listen to music, one day you’re so happy and want to blast Bruno Mars' "24K Magic" and the next you want to cry your eyes out to Adele’s 21 album."
What should people expect from your Five Day Forecast show?
Fanny: "A lot of energy and a lot of new music!"
What are you working on now/next?
Fanny: "I’m working on my EP, which is super exiting. And I’ve been in the studio a lot lately, making songs I’m super stoked about. Can’t wait to show people what I have!"
How is 2018 shaping up? What are you looking forward to next year?
Fanny: "I think 2018 is gonna be pretty hectic! I’m looking forward to releasing my EP, I’m gonna play shows at some super cool festivals, and yeah, basically just living the dream. Haha!"
