New York City declares 20 January David Bowie Day
New York City's mayor, Bill de Blasio, has proclimed that today, 20 January, is David Bowie Day.
The iconic musician's Facebook page revealed the news: "The proclamation will be read tonight at the curtain call of the final performance of the sold-out run of Lazarus, the New York Theater Workshop production conceived and co-created by Bowie."
This is the latest in a long line of innovative tributes - the German Foreign Office, Belgian astronomers, Coldplay, Rough Trade, the BRIT Awards, his birthplace of Brixton, and the British public have all honoured the star in their own unique ways.
Bowie had lived in the city since the '90s with his family, and wrote much of his music in the city.
23 September 2014 was proclaimed David Bowie Day in Chicago.
Bowie passed away following an 18-month battle with cancer on 10 January. He released his 25th studio record Blackstar on 8 January, his 69th birthday, as a "parting gift". It has now hit the top spot in 69 different countries.
