Trials of a new treatment could offer hope for tinnitus sufferers.
Acoustic Co-Ordinated Reset Neuromodulation, which requires the patient to listen to specific sounds through specially designed headphones, has been found to be effective in reducing symptoms in three quarters of cases.
The treatment is currently only available to private patients, at a cost of around £4,500 – but it is thought that the results of the trial could encourage its uptake by the NHS.
It is estimated that around one in ten Brits suffer from tinnitus.
