Pixies drummer Dave Lovering has confirmed the band’s intention to write and record new material.
In an interview with Spinner, Lovering explained that once the band’s current tour schedule finishes, they “plan to make something new”.
Guitarist Joey Santiago added, “Making a record will be in the forefront. We’ve definitely gelled as a unit and hopefully when we can all bury the hatchet – and we have – maybe we’ll go in there and hope for the best.”
The band have toured almost non-stop since their reunion in 2004. Aside from a couple of random tracks (a cover of ‘Ain’t That Pretty At All’ for a Warren Zevon tribute record and a song put forward for one of the Shrek movies) there’s been nothing new for fans.
The lack of post-reunion material has often been attributed to the creative tensions between frontman Frank Black and bass player Kim Deal although Santiago speculated that this friction might actually be part of what sparks them into writing together again.
“I think that makes good music”, explained Santiago. “We’ve always kind of used it. Like, ‘Oh yeah? Screw you, we’re gonna play’. That little angst, it’s good.”
