Neil Young delivers surprise 1987 album Summer Songs
For Christmas Day, Neil Young surprise-released a lost collection of songs from 1987 called Summer Songs that he first teased last month.
Last month, Young revealed via his archives site that he had uncovered another collection of recordings from back in 1987 titled Summer Songs, and teased that it "may be released as a separate archive album."
On Christmas Day Young treated his archives site subscribers to the full Summer Songs collection. The album was recorded at Broken Arrow Ranch, and features eight songs.
Young wrote, "Happy Holidays everyone! I think you will enjoy this very cool recording – lost for years, but not forgotten. Now a gift. NYA’s files reveal the whole history. American Dream feels more real than ever. How could somethin’ so good go bad so fast? Wow, that was a little sad. But things are still good down on the farm right? Not so fast. Thanks Willie, John, Dave, Carolyn, Annie, for all you’ve done. It’s an honour being there with you. Replanting for next year? The farmer’s wife, the children, the animals. the birds. Kinda leaves you hangin’. We can win." According to Young in his November post, he revealed that Summer Songs "influenced four albums", and that many of the lyrics on Summer Songs are "significantly different from their subsequent master album releases in many cases", with several songs having "completely new and unheard verses."
