NASA unveil Soundcloud account, share 60 samples of space-related noises
NASA has just opened up its Soundcloud account to the public. On their page, you can listen to approximately 60 different samples of the organisation's missions over the years.
"LCROSS: Water On The Moon Song" is a particular highlight.
Don't expect to hear too many noises from actual space though, as sound cannot travel through the void. Much of it relates to the launches and conversations between personnel.
In a statement, NASA said:
"You can hear the roar of a space shuttle launch or Neil Armstrong's "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind" every time you get a phone call, if you make our sounds your ringtone. Or, you can hear the memorable words 'Houston, we've had a problem,' every time you make an error on your computer."
The account has already amassed over 10,000 followers. Comments for each track are disabled, but it'll be exciting to see if any musicians opt to actually sample the noises, and if, indeed, the licensing will extend that far.
In summation, it seems like the viral marketing campaign for NASA's upcoming debut is working well. Perhaps they'll Beyoncé it.
Listen to lots of weird noises, muffled talking, rocketships and beepily-boopily gizmos below. You can also listen to various astronauts counting.
