A rip roaring roadshow: Mumford & Sons bring their Gentlemen of The Road tour to All Points East
Although their roots are in the South side of the city, Mumford & Sons’ set at All Points East in London’s Victoria Park is a triumphant homecoming.
Despite being under the All Points East name, Saturday's event was brought exclusively to London’s Victoria Park by the Gentlemen of the Road themselves. Featuring a handpicked bill, the festival included sets from The Vaccines, Dizzee Rascal, Leon Bridges, The Staves, Villagers and Marika Hackman.
With four albums of material under their belts, Mumford & Sons allow their varying sides to show throughout the set. From the foot-stomping anthems of Sigh No More and Babel to the plugged-in, amped-up wig out of Wilder Mind and latest offering Delta.
“Guiding Light” is an epic opener featuring lyrics that only sound right when beamed through the filter of 40,000 voices: “even when there’s no star in sight, you’ll always be my only guiding light”. “Little Lion Man”, “The Cave” and “Believe” command a two-footed onslaught onto the park’s turf.
“We’re Mumford & Sons”, the frontman screams after a frenzied response to “The Cave”, pausing to reflect before playing some more cuts from Delta. Later “The Wolf” is played with its rip-roaring riff and “Tompkins Square Park” is packed full of brooding guitar lines.
Closers “I Will Wait” and “With A Little Help From My Friends” make great use of the brass section and, with help from some of the festival favourites, they deliver a superb finale. Marcus Mumford’s gruff tone followed the Joe Cocker version more faithfully than The Beatles original, yet it rounds off proceedings in an overwhelming fashion as fireworks light up the sky.
All Points East concludes today with Bon Iver and Mac Demarco leading the evening’s proceedings.
