Mumford & Sons to perform at tennis stadium relaunch
It looks like Marcus Mumford and company are looking to keep Murray Mania alive for a least a while longer, announcing that Mumford & Sons will play at a tennis stadium relaunch.
The famous West Side Tennis Stadium in Forest Hills, New York is being revived after being neglected since 1978, with the London folk troubadours set to perform at its relaunch.
Over the years the stadium has played host not only to tennis tournaments like the US Open but also to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Billie Jean King and The Beatles. In 1978 the US Open moved home to the nearby Flushing Meadows and Forest Hills as a venue was eventually shut down amid complaints from nearby residents about the noise and crowds.
Now the 16,000-seat venue plans to return to its former glory, ”We were once the center of the tennis universe,” says club president Roland Meier. “And this is our revival.” With the world in the grips of tennis fever following Andy Murray’s victory at Wimbledon, now may just be the perfect time.
