Mudhoney bassist Guy Maddison discusses "career" as a nurse, says band is a "hobby"

You'd think grunge legends like Mudhoney would be able to stand just from the income provided by two decades of touring, album-releasing and hard-rockin', but apparently this simply ain't so.

In a world where profit for musicians is becoming scarcer and scarcer, it seems even the titans of yore aren't immune to financial wobbles.

Speaking in a new interview with the University of Washington's NewsBeat, bassist Guy Maddison - who joined Mudhoney in 2001 - speaks about his day job as a nurse:

“For me, music is more of an area of fun and entertainment. Nursing fills a different space; it is a career. My time in Mudhoney is a very extensive and elaborate hobby. I think the other guys would say the same thing... it’s true we go all over the world and play about 50 shows a year, but that doesn’t meet the financial requirements of having a family (a wife and young daughter). There’s no 401(k) or retirement plan.”

Hopefully he's handed in his holiday request form, as the band play ATP Iceland next July.
