MTV Unplugged is coming back this year
MTV returned to its roots by playing actual music upon hearing the news of Prince's death. Now they're going one step further.
The network is bringing back MTV Unplugged, their much-loved series that plonks artists in a stripped-back environment. The likes of Prince, Nirvana, Elton John, Lykke Li, Lauryn Hill, and Jay Z are among the artists who've graced the legendary Unplugged stage.
A press release from MTV says: "the revitalized Unplugged will restore key elements that made the franchise so groundbreaking in the first place, while resetting the show in the multi-platform video world of today."
Unplugged began in 1989 and tapered off in the early '00s, with a few specials and online episodes appearing at odd intervals.
MTV will also begin a new show called Wonderland which will feature music performances, young comedians, new music, and more at a venue in Los Angeles.
"Live performances are the beating heart of every episode and this show will provide a platform for artists to experiment with the unexpected, express their creativity in new ways and deliver one-off performances that will become inked in the public consciousness," MTV's press statement says.
