Moddi talks Nordic Matters at the Southbank, live streaming performance of 'Unsongs' this weekend
Today sees the launch of Nordic Matters at the Southbank Centre, a celebration of Nordic art and culture through music, dance, theatre, literature, spoken word, visual art, design, fashion and food.
As part of the musical side of the festival, Norwegian Moddi will play a free show around his latest album Unsongs. You'll be able to watch this show on a live stream on this page tomorrow, Saturday 14 January.
We featured Moddi's take on Kate Bush's "Army Dreamers" last year, and we spoke to the singer about what we can expect from his performance at the Southbank.
Are you excited to involved in the Nordic Matters festival?
"I'm a little nervous to be 'representing' Norway completely without moose, trolls or canned northern lights. After all, my last album, Unsongs, is an album with banned songs from 12 different countries. It is an album from the world, in the world. But if there's one thing that we should try to export more of from Scandinavia, then it is freedom of speech. We simply do not have the faintest idea about how lucky we are. So yes, I am looking forward to contributing with a little Nordic Unstoppability.
What can people expect from your performance at Nordic Matters festival?
"Songs. Songs and stories. That's basically what I do. In order to make the album, I travelled for a year to meet people around the world who have felt censorship on their skin. Exiled musicians, imprisoned musicians, the families of murdered artists. I know that we can't travel through the whole world in a short hour at Southbank, but it'll be a bit of a geography lesson anyway."
Are there any other artists / performers you’re looking forward to seeing?
"To be honest, I have absolutely no idea about what's going on, except that I have heard rumours about a lot of hygge. Hygge everywhere. I might actually bring some myself."
