Ministry of Sound suing Spotify for users copying their compilations for own playlists
Been to a party recently when someone’s requested you put on the latest NOW! That’s What I Call Music CD? Unlikely. Attended one where the Spotify playlist being played has basically been assembled of all the recent hits that would likely feature on any new compilation hitting the shelves. Of course and dance label Ministry of Sound have caught on to this.
As The Guardian report, Ministry of Sound are suing Spotify for having “refused to delete users’ playlists that copy its compilation albums”.
“Everyone is talking about curation, but curation has been the cornerstone of our business for the last 20 years,” the label’s chief executive Lohan Presencer told the paper. ”If we don’t step up and take some action against a service and users that are dismissing our curation skills as just a list, that opens up the floodgates to anybody who wants to copy what a curator is doing”.
Presencer continued that the company have been pressing the music streaming service for about a year on the issue, with no action yet to be done. ”It’s been incredibly frustrating: we think it’s been very clear what we’re arguing, but there has been a brick wall from Spotify”.
