Mikal Cronin unveils new single "Shelter"

03 September 2019, 15:07 | Written by Cerys Kenneally

Mikal Cronin has returned with new single "Shelter", from his first album in four years, Seeker.

"Shelter" is the second offering to be lifted from his new record, after last month's lead single "Show Me".

Speaking about "Shelter", Cronin says, "This is a song about searching for answers in an uncertain world. It’s about the observer reluctantly stepping out of their comfort zone and looking around, while trying to keep their head straight. Musically, it’s dense and polyrhythmic. The string line weaves it all together for me. When writing a song with a lot of additive looping rhythmic parts, I think of Brian Eno."

Cronin's new album Seeker will be his first since 2015's MCIII.

The demos of Seeker were created during a month-long solo visit to Idyllwild in southern California. Speaking about the process, Cronin explains, "It was so quiet and peaceful. I got weird looks at the store. I got bug bites that didn’t heal for months. I walked around a small lake a few times. I wrote. I took literally something that’s usually a hypothetical, something every artist thinks about doing. It worked."

"Shelter" is out now. Mikal Cronin's new album Seeker is due to land on 25 October via Merge. He plays London's Moth Club on 25 February 2020. Find out more.
