Michael Head made a very welcome return to the stage this weekend (6th May) with an unannounced solo performance at the intimate Lion Coffee & Records store in Clapton.
Walking through the audience, Head stood in the corner of the store, armed with an acoustic guitar and his mighty voice to play a short, but blissful set. The songs included his work with The Strands and Shack as well as his last EP, 2013s Artorius Revisited with The Red Elastic Band. The highlight was the wonderful “Somethin’ Like You” from The Magical World of the Strands. Released in the late 90s, it sounded like a lost classic, that saw the room descend into rapt silence.
The last time Head released an album was with Shack’s On the Corner of Miles and Gil and he’s due to release his first record in over a decade with the forthcoming Adiós Señor Pussycat
As he finished Head told the audience, “This is beautiful, this should happen more often.” Yes, it should. A Saturday afternoon in the company of one of the country’s greatest songwriters was a treat.
