MF DOOM was apparently close to completing the Madvillainy sequel before he died
Stones Throw Records founder Peanut Butter Wolf has revealed that MF DOOM was close to completing the Madvillainy sequel before his death.
Last month Jasmine Dumile, the wife of MF DOOM, shared a post via his Instagram that revealed the masked rapper died on 31 October. The legendary rapper was 49, and the cause of death is yet to be revealed.
In a new episode of the Juan Ep is Dead podcast, Stones Throw Records founder Peanut Butter Wolf discussed the late rapper, and revealed that he was attempting to finish a Madvillainy sequel before his death. Madvillainy was the debut collaborative album from MF DOOM and Madlib, released in 2004.
On the Juan Ep is Dead podcast episode about MF DOOM, Peanut Butter Wolf described MF DOOM as "a pillar of Stones Throw", and said DOOM was one of the first artists that he worked with that he genuinely looked up to.
While discussing Madvillainy, Peanut Butter Wolf confirmed he presented the idea of collaborating with Madlib (who MF DOOM wasn't familiar with at the time) to DOOM all those years ago after Madlib told Peanut Butter Wolf he'd love to collaborate with DOOM and J Dilla. When reflecting on the process of making that album, the Stones Throw founder recalled that Madlib had "so many tracks", and that MF DOOM was "blown away" by Madlib.
Peanut Butter Wolf also revealed that DOOM was working on completing a sequel to Madvillainy before his death. The Stones Throw Records founder said, "And Madvillain 2, you know, DOOM was always telling me 'ah, I'm 85% done, 85%', that was always the magic number."
He continued, "He basically sent us 11 tracks in 2009, and I was ready to, you know, try to just like finish it up at that point, and it was always just like 'just wait for a few more songs, wait for a few more songs', and then tracks would start being on other albums."
Peanut Butter Wolf added that he was "a little frustrated" but he didn't want to "be the guy to force creativity".
He went on to say that he doesn't know what they'll do with the tracks, and added that he's been talking with MF DOOM's manager about potentially releasing the songs, but they haven't worked everything out just yet.
