Matt Sweeney and Bonnie "Prince" Billy announce Superwolves album with new single "Hall of Death"
Matt Sweeney and Bonnie "Prince" Billy are back with news of their first collaborative album in 16 years, Superwolves, and have unveiled their "Hall of Death" track to accompany the announcement.
"Hall of Death" marks Sweeney and Bonnie "Prince" Billy's first collaborative release of 2021, following November's "Make Worry For Me", which features as the opening track on Superwolves.
The new song was written with Tuareg guitarist and producer Ahmoudou Madassane. Madassane contributes rhythm electric guitar to the track, while his bandmates Mdou Moctar plays lead guitar, Mike Coltun on electric bass, and Souleyman Ibrahim on drumset.
Superwolves will follow the duo's 2005 debut collaborative album Superwolf.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy, real name Will Oldham, says of working with Sweeney, "The chemistry comes from lives, lived separately, in which music is crucial sustenance. We listen with gratitude and awe, knowing that we belong in there. We construct our dream selves with the faith that these selves will have their chance at life. We know what we are capable of doing and just need each other’s support to bring the imagined languages to life."
Sweeney adds, "I love the challenge to write melodies for Will to sing. Struggle with that challenge too. Knowing that Will’s voice will elevate the melody makes me reach higher and dig deeper for the tune. Makes me want to match it with a guitar part that holds his voice like a chalice holds wine (or blood, or whatever is needed to live the best life). I also love singing harmonies and responses to this voice of his."
The duo began work on Superwolves five years ago, but only arranged their first studio session about a year ago at Brooklyn’s Strange Weather, before moving on to the Butcher Shoppe in Nashville for their second session. Sweeney supervised the mixing of the Brooklyn sessions, while Oldham oversaw the mixing of their Nashville sessions.
