London Mayor Sadiq Khan is a member of the Sting fan club
To cap off a mammoth year of celebrations, London institution Rough Trade invites Mayor Sadiq Khan to chat about music and his plans for the city.
Khan speaks to Rough Trade's store manager Noreen McShane for their On The Record podcast as part of a collaboration with the #LondonIsOpen campaign.
The wide-ranging interview sees McShane and Khan discuss the challenges facing the UK capital's live scene - including Fabric's closure and subsequent reopening - as well as more personal topics such as Khan's favourite music and the impact it's had on him and his family.
Khan also picked out some of his favourite records from the shop to discuss - he picked tunes from Madness, Michael Jackson, Sting, Prince, The Clash, and Florence and The Machine.
Elaborating on his love of The Police, Khan revealed he's been a member of the Sting fan club since he was young and calls "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" "arguably the best pop song ever written".
The Tooting-born Mayor says of Rough Trade: "[Their] 40th anniversary is a true success story and shows that London is open to creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Exciting ventures like this are the backbone of London’s economy and the influence Rough Trade has had on the capital’s night life and the music landscape in the UK and around the world is immense. It’s been great to spend some time in this legendary store and browse their amazing collection of vinyl records.”
McShane adds: "The #LondonIsOpen campaign is all about creativity, bringing people together and London's independent shops and venues: all things that Rough Trade endeavour to support. Having Sadiq come into the store to record a radio show is a great way to celebrate this, and the shop's 40th anniversary."
