L'Impératrice find inspiration in the French '70s on their sultry new single
French sextet L’Impératrice’s brand of chilled out electro gets a '70s twist on their new single, "Les Sultans des îles", slithering onto the dancefloor with silken vocals and funk guitar.
Taken from upcoming EP Séquences, the track can be read as an homage to the great French songwriter of the '70s and '80s Michel Berger, and especially to his "Les Princes des Villes", the title of which they have borrowed and reworked for their own. L’Impératrice also share Berger's interest in cinema, and their new video makes this relationship explicit.
Directed by Parachutes it is a series of trailers: remakes in various styles of the same slasher flick. Gory, suggestive, and heavily tongue in cheek, it is also a nod towards the band’s home turf: the area of Pigalle in Paris, whose seedy nightlife sets the track’s mood and supplies the video’s brothel setting.
L’Impératrice’s eagerly awaited album should arrive soon. In the meantime "Les Sultans des îles" is the perfect accompaniment to a sultry summer night.
