Library of Congress to preserve Radiohead's OK Computer
Radiohead's pioneering record OK Computer is among list of 25 sound recordings added to Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.
Radiohead's OK Computer, The Doors' self-titled album, records by Lauryn Hill, Sly and The Family Stone and Joan Baez, and radio coverage of President Franklin D Roosevelt’s funeral are amongst the recordings selected by the library for preservation.
Every year the library chooses a list of recordings it deems “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” to be preserved in the National Recording Registry, and has been doing so for 15 years under terms of a preservation act.
Of the additions, curator Matt Barton said the following:
“I see it as part of a certain ongoing phenomenon in rock music that maybe begins with the Velvet Underground but also the Doors, who are on the registry this year. Pop music is not entirely positive in its outlook, shall we say. I think we can say that OK Computer really sums a lot of that up.”
Listen to Philip Selway talk about the album on Mary Anne Hobbs' show below. A full list of the recordings added to the Library Of Congress this year can be found after.
