L Devine previews mixtape with new single "Priorities"
L Devine has released new cut "Priorities" as the latest preview of her forthcoming mixtape Near Life Experience: Part 1, which will arrive on Friday (30 July).
"Priorities" follows May's "Girls Like Sex" single, and will appear on Near Life Experience: Part 1 alongside earlier outings "Naked Alone" and "Don't Say It".
L Devine says of the new song, "I had the title "Priorities" in mind for a while. I just wanted to get my frustrations in a relationship out, as I was so maddened that this person wasn’t putting me first, like I was with them. Over time, the song’s meaning has changed for me. Now it makes me think of the journey I’ve been on with myself since I wrote it. I’ve realised all the things I list in the song that this person is prioritising over me, are things I should be doing for myself. I was so fixated on putting my whole self-worth onto this person when really, I just needed to stop and look after myself."
She adds of the upcoming mixtape, "I wanted to push the boundaries of pop music but at the same time, really hone in on the lyrics on Near Life Experience. As a whole, this project is a lot more introspective than my previous releases. It’s about self-evaluation. The songs are all different moments of heart-searching, whether about my mental health, who I am in a relationship, my expectations as a woman, or whether I’m good person or not. The title is a play on words of near-death experience. To me, it symbolises all the times I thought I nearly knew what the experience of life meant, only to be proven wrong. And that I definitely do not have it all worked out."
Near Life Experience: Part 1 will be followed by Near Life Experience: Part 2 later this year.
