Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged guitar sells for record-breaking $6million
The guitar that Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance has sold for a record-breaking $6million.
Last month, Julien's Auctions announced that Cobain's 1959 Martin D-18E guitar would be going up for auction.
Cobain used the guitar during Nirvana's MTV Unplugged session in 1993. They played 14 tracks, including "About A Girl", "Pennyroyal Tea", "Come As You Are", David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World", and more.
Over the weekend, Cobain's guitar sold at auction for a record-breaking price of $6.01million, which is the most expensive guitar to ever be sold at auction.
Cobain's guitar was won by Røde Microphones founder Peter Freedman. When interviewed by the PA News Agency, Freedman said, "It’s a big deal. I didn’t even buy it for me. I paid for it but I’m going to use it to highlight the plight of artists worldwide by touring it around and then I’m going to sell it and use the dough for that as well, later."
The 1959 Martin D-18E guitar is the second Cobain item from the Nirvana MTV Unplugged session to be auctioned off in the past year. Back in October 2019, Julien's Auctions sold Cobain's green cardigan for $334,000.
