“Hardcore feminist” Kesha releases anti-Trump anthem “Woman”
Kesha follows up comeback ballad “Praying” with the punchy “Woman”, featuring the legendary Dap-Kings Horns.
“I know everyone is feeling Donald Trump around the world, and his… ew-ness,” Kesha told the audience at her super secret album playback earlier this month. “It’s gross. This song was prompted by his grabbing a woman ‘by the pussy’. That made me so infuriated as a hardcore feminist. Ever since I was a kid and knew what a feminist was, I was a feminist, raised by a feminist. Once I heard that [comment] I was like, okay, well, I’m going to write this song.
Recording for the explicit new cut was an exciting process, from taking the Dap-Kings feature as a pipe dream to a reality, to Kesha getting locked in a vocal booth during one of the sessions. “I almost suffocated to death!” she laughs, alarmingly nonchalant. “I had to get drilled out and get pulled through a window.”
At the end of the day, though, the singer explains that it’s the lyrics of this upbeat new track that are the most important part: “This song is about being a badass motherfucking woman who you don’t want to fuck with.”
