Kaytranada wins Polaris Music Prize 2016
Kaytranada has won Canada's Polaris Music Prize for his record 99.9%, beating Grimes, Carly Rae Jepsen, and PUP in the process.
Black Mountain, Jessy Lanza, Andy Shauf, White Lung, U.S. Girls, and Basia Bulat were all also shortlisted for the award, which comes with a $50,000 cash injection.
Kaytranada, real name Louis Kevin Celestin, was born in Haiti and is based in Montreal. On winning, he said: "For me, it’s crazy to get this award. It’s really, truly, a big honour... shout-outs to all of y’all. It's amazing... I want to thank the judges and everybody for voting for me. Thank you very much."
Last year's prize winner Buffy Sainte-Marie presented Kaytranada with his award at the ceremony, which took place last night in Toronto. 11
XL Recordings released 99.9% in the UK.
