Kate Bush "overwhelmed" after "Running Up That Hill" tops UK Singles Chart
Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" topped the UK Singles Chart last Friday (17 June) after appearing on Stranger Things season four, and she's revealed in a recent post that she's "overwhelmed by the scale of affection and support the song is receiving."
Since the release of Stranger Things season four on Netflix last month, streams for Kate Bush's 1985 hit "Running Up That Hill" have skyrocketed. After re-entering the UK Top 10 in the Singles Chart at number eight on 3 June, the track reached a new peak of number two on 10 June, and last Friday (17 June) it reached the top of the UK Singles Chart, and broke multiple records in the process.
As the Official Charts Company reports, Bush has achieved the biggest ever gap between Number One singles in Official Chart history, with 44 years between "Wuthering Heights" in 1978 and "Running Up That Hill". The Stranger Things-assisted number one also gives Bush the record of the longest time a track has taken to reach the top of the UK Singles Chart (37 years!), and at 63-years-old she's also now the oldest female to achieve a UK Number One, overtaking Cher who was 52 when "Believe" topped the chart in 1998.
Following the new achievement, Bush shared another post on her site reacting to the news. She wrote, "I salute the Duffer Brothers for their courage - taking this new series into a much more adult and darker place. I want to thank them so much for bringing the song into so many people’s lives."
"I’m overwhelmed by the scale of affection and support the song is receiving and it’s all happening really fast, as if it’s being driven along by a kind of elemental force," Bush added. "I have to admit I feel really moved by it all. Thank you so very much for making the song a No 1 in such an unexpected way."
