Johanna Samuels covers Elliott Smith's "Single File" for Kill Rock Stars’ 30th anniversary
Johanna Samuels has covered Elliott Smith's "Single File" as part of Kill Rock Stars' 30th anniversary covers series Stars Rock Kill (Rock Stars).
Samuels' cover of "Single File" follows last month's "Nature’s Way" single, which accompanied news of Samuels' Sam Evian-produced debut album Excelsior!.
Kill Rock Stars' 30th anniversary cover series started on 1 January with Mary Lou Lord and Mikaela Davis' cover of Smith's "Some Song", and has included other covers by artists including Little Mazarn, Badlands, The Hackles and more.
Samuels' Excelsior! debut album will also include last year's "High Tide For One" single.
Excelsior! was recorded in the middle of winter at a small cabin in West Shokan in NY State with her band and producer Sam Evian. The album was largely recorded to tape and features contributions from Courtney Marie Andrews, Hannah Cohen, Lomelda’s Hannah Read, A.O. Gerber, Louise Florence and Olivia Kaplan. Samuels says, "I made the record mostly with men and that's a space I find myself in constantly in music. So it was a very important and special part of the record to have these different womxn that held me up. I really looked up to all the womxn that sang on the record."
