Jeshi announces debut album with new single "3210"
London's Jeshi is back with news of his upcoming debut album Universal Credit, and has unveiled his Cadenza-produced, rave-inspired new single "3210" to accompany the announcement.
"3210" follows Jeshi's January Fredwave collaboration "Another Cigarette", and is accompanied by a slick Will Dohrn-directed video.
Dohrn, who also directed IDLES' "War" video and other projects for Nike, slowthai, A-COLD WALL* and more, said of the video, "Life as a zoopraxiscope. The zoopraxiscope was invented by Eadweard Muybridge in the late 1800’s. He realised that spinning a series of photographs or illustrations in front of the eye at a certain speed would animate the images, inventing the first ever motion picture or video as we now describe it. In the film we unravel the zoopraxiscope into a seemingly never-ending line of photographs that portray recollections from Jeshi’s past, guiding his path through familiar or significant places in his life."
The new single also arrives alongside news of Jeshi's debut album Universal Credit, which will feature previous singles "Another Cigarette", "Generation", "Hit By A Train" and "Sick". It'll also feature new collaborations with Obongjayar and Fredwave.
In a statement, Jeshi wrote of his debut album: "My grand satirical reappropriation of two words that British media have given a negative connotation. Two words that mean embarrassment for a lot of people. A smart and tongue in-cheek tribute to the reality of everyday life for young Britons. Heartfelt and high-octane; drawing in depth from my 25 years living here.
"Telling the story which millions inside this country and being are living in, especially at this strange moment in time we’re in. Being broke as fuck with nothing to look forward to and the madness we do to deal with that.
"There’s a constant theme of things going wrong no matter how big or small they are. From dropping my cigarette, to not having a dad, to getting fired from a job I hate. The nights out, followed by a morning that feels like you got hit by a train - then bumping the train home or cutting your phone off and feeling like nothing ever goes your way."
Jeshi added, "In a less monetary and literal sense, I’d like to draw attention to the word ‘credit’. The idea that we all deserve credit for getting through whatever shit we have going on in our lives. This isn’t some sob story. There are loads of people who have been and are going through the same things as me. I want this album to feel like a release of these stresses and a celebration of getting through it regardless. As ‘two mums’, the most personal song on the record says ‘won’t see me moan about the cards in my hand. If Universal Credit is what our government gives those of us going through a rough time- here’s my flip on that. This is Universal Credit from me to you."
