Brighton-based songstrel Jennifer Left releases her official debut single ‘Black Dog’/‘Hushabye’ through her own Singing Hinny Music label on 4 June 2012.
With the exception of a persuasive cover of New Order’s ‘Temptation’, which showed up online in March last year, ‘Black Dog’ is the singer’s first release. In case you were wondering, its breezy music-hall rhythm and Jennifer’s distinctive warble take the lead track several sonic furlongs from the Led Zeppelin song of the same name; the dreamier ‘Hushabye’ turns up the strings to woozy effect.
Both tracks are taken from Jennifer’s debut album, also called Hushabye, due out later this year and completed with the help of producers Tim Bidwell (Fink, Peggy Sue) and Bonobo guitarist Ewan Wallace. The single also boasts a trio of remixes from Murder He Wrote, Restlesslist (featuring members of Brakes and Electric Soft Parade) and Rob Da Bank-championed The Wild Knights.
All tracks and remixes are currently streaming at jenniferleft.com, and for sale on iTunes and Bandcamp from 4 June.
Jennifer, originally from Newcastle but now residing on the south coast, is playing a handful of dates to support the release:
Mon 4 Jun London Festifeel, Queen of Hoxton festifeel.com
Tue 5 Jun Hay-on-Wye How The Light Gets In festival, Globe Hall howthelightgetsin.org

Lammo and Don Letts have both played Jennifer on the radio, but do give the poor girl a leg up anyway – her clothes are made of paper, for goodness’ sake…
