JEFF The Brotherhood: "The universe is in the shape of a triangle. Everything is three."
JEFF The Brotherhood speak to us about upcoming record Zone, real(i)ty, and what's changed 11 albums into their career.
The psych-rock duo of Nashville brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall have a very special LP in Zone. It's the third and final part of a "spiritual trilogy" of records - following Heavy Days (2009) and We Are The Champions (2011) - with songs "Toasted", "You", and "Portugal" forming a fascinating centrepiece. The trio of tracks are a thematic trilogy in themselves, exploring the nature of reality.
Hear the album's "Roachin", featuring Alicia Bognanno of Bully, and check out our Q&A with the Orralls after.
How has 2016 been treating you so far?
V. spicy.
How does it feel releasing your 11th album?
We are really proud of this one, our first real post-major label album!
Did you ever think you'd make this many?
We figured we would make like nine or 18 or a multiple of nine, but didn’t think too much about it.
In terms of music, are you still finding things out about each other, or do you know each other inside out now?
Our tastes and ability are continually changing, so as soon as we think we've got it all figured out, there’s some new inspiration to draw from.
How has writing/recording changed over the course of your career?
Recording really hasn't; we've always tried to make the best-sounding recording we could possibly make with whatever resources we had - that's the main thing thats changed, the resources. The process is always the same, drums and guitar live, then vocals, then we listen and try and get a feel for what kind of overdubs would make the song interesting. As far as songwriting goes, it's varied so much over the years it would take too long to explain.
How did Zone come together?
Well we just put our noses to the grindstone and gave 110% and just wrote up some jams and took ‘em to the studio to bang ‘em out, you know? Really organic with a very zen flow. We knew we wanted to work with Colin Dupuis, who recorded Hypnotic Nights and Dig The Classics, and we knew we wanted to work at Club Roar, so Dine Alone put that together for us and made our dreams come true! Then we just hit it hard every day.
How does it wrap up the triology?
It’s the last of the three. The universe is in the shape of a triangle. Everything is three. There are squares and circles in the universe, but if you look close enough you’ll see they are triangles.
Could you explain how "Toasted", "You", and "Portugal" explore the nature of reality?
I think they have a very real vibe, and you know how that goes, you know? It’s just real. That is to say it’s not not real. They were a trilogy on accident, it happened in the studio, but it makes sense to us, because of the law of three.
What are your own thoughts on reality?
I think it’s a good business to be in, especially in Nashville where we are having a real boom, if I had the money to flip houses right now I would.
Was there anything you set out to do when starting this record?
We really just wanted to make a badass record that would be fun to play live and fun to listen to, and I think we definitely did! We used some amp distortion AND recorded some big roomy drums. We don’t usually do that.
What's next?
Next we go on tour all up the East Coast of the USA and all around some of Western Europe! We’re looking forward to eating all our fav foods up and down the East Coast, drinking lots of good beer in Europe (the beer is just so much better) and visiting our friends.
Zone is out 30 September via Dine Alone. Stream it below.
