Watching Jamie xx perform solo made us want to be better, says The xx's Oliver Sims
The xx's Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sims have said that watching bandmate Jamie xx perform solo spurred them make the new album's songs "the best they could be".
In a wide-ranging new interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe the indie trio discussed impending LP I See You, what they got up to after 2012's Coexist, and much more.
At one point, Lowe asks Madley Croft and Sims about Jamie xx's impressive solo venture In Colour, which they contributed guest vocals to.
"It was nice to see him," says Madley Croft. "'cause Oliver and I are looking forward at the audience and trying to perform. It’s hard to stand there and look back at Jamie."
"Being in the audience and hearing our own voices is really surreal," Sims adds, noting how awkward it is standing there listening to themselves. "No one can see me dancing to this," he jokes.
"I’ll tell you what also going to Jamie’s shows," Sims continues, "I’m not gonna say jealousy because jealousy is 'I don't want you to have this', but it definitely lit a fire underneath us, I’m gonna say us. Like we want to be up there, so proud of Jamie and like such a fan as well, but it was 'we want this again' so it definitely drove us to work on the songs we had to make sure they were the best they could be.
